turquoise bangle wrap

It has been a long time coming, but the ETSY Spotlight Feature on my blog is finally returning! I love ETSY so much, and love celebrating other ETSIANS and I am looking for shops to feature, handmade, vintage, supplies — I’m considering all kinds of different shops to feature.

The blog will run weekly, featuring one new artist every week. If you are considered I will send a set of questions to your email or ETSY conversations. So if you would like to be considered please send me a conversation at NaturalAmber on ETSY or please send me an email at naturalamberjewelry@yahoo.com

Let’s start celebrating the wonderful ETSY community!

ETSY 101: Holidays and Getting Ready for Season

Red Shell Coin Charm Bracelet

It’s July, and yes many sellers on ETSY are already planning the most busiest season of the year: the fall and winter season. Why so early? Planning ahead is always a good idea, you want to be ready. It would be a shame to be half way through the season and realize you weren’t ready for it. I started season planning last month. My shop Natural Amber Designs will be running advertisements and special promotions throughout the season. So as a seller what can you do to start planning for the busy season?

* Stock Up Shop Now. Currently I have 226 listings in my ETSY shop, 48 in my Artfire and I am planning on adding my entire collection of jewelry to both Artfire and ETSY. My plan is to have close to 300 once September/October rolls around.

* Start Making Your Holiday/Season Items. Last year I didn’t offer any holiday jewelry, this year I am planning on having some and see how it goes. Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas (even thinking valentines)

* Scope out and Reserve Advertising Now. This piece of advice is huge. If you wait until the last minute to buy advertisement on Craftcult, Magazines, big websites you may lose out. Sellers are already reserving thiers

* Have a Plan, Stock Up.  Stock up on the essentials, tape, mailers, gift boxes, tags, bags, you don’t want to be out of the essentials when the orders come in, it could delay orders from shipping out. Make sure you are ready!

Remember, it’s never too early to start a business plan, a marketing plan, or an advertsing plan. The more you can get your name out, and the earlier make your chances better of having a successful season.

ETSY: Best Tips and Advice For A Newbie

Turquoise Earrings

July 18th is my one year anniversary on the handmade site ETSY, and there is so many helpful pieces of advice I learned about selling online. I never sold online, just in craft fairs and at home jewelry parties so having my own store front online was a new adventure. There are definitely things I learned quickly about selling online, things I never wanted to admit about selling online, and so many lessons learned from more seasoned sellers then I. We have all been newbies, and there are times when all you need is just a little advice. These are my best lessons learned on ETSY and selling online:

* PICTURES. PICTURES. PICTURES.  I can not emphasize this one enough, pictures are what draws customers to your shop so they need to stand out, they need to look professional, and they need to be free of clutter. When I first started it took me more then 6 months to look at my shop constructively and realized I wasn’t selling because my pictures weren’t that great. I can always improve on them, but the step I have taken in re-doing, using a light box and freeing distractions has boosted my views tremendously.

* PROMOTE. PROMOTE. PROMOTE.  Etsy gives you the shopping cart, gives you the storefront, and gives you the ability to sell online but that does not guarantee buyers. I think alot of sellers come to ETSY thinking that all these buyers are going to find you in search (I know that’s what I told myself for more then 6 months) and then become discouraged when the sales aren’t coming. In a saturated jewelry market there is no way I could rely on ETSY alone. Make sure you are promoting locally, use social network sites, get the word out that this is your shop, come visit it!

* MAKE WHAT YOU LOVE, DON’T COPY WHAT SELLS.  It is more then okay to sell things that are popular, but I hate when I see a million sellers selling the same idea copying each other because it is what buyers are buying. I think it is more then okay to run with an idea, make it your own, but don’t copy those silver earrings because the other girls shop sells them quick. Customers like being able to see a picture, see a piece of jewelry with your trademark style.

* DON’T FORGET TO NETWORK ON ETSY.Hearting, participating in the forums, participating in teams, and participating in chat is a strong way to network and gain buyers on ETSY. I can not tell you enough how many times I have bought supplies from sellers who hearted my work, and have hearted people back with intention to buy (especially during the holiday season). Often times buyers are lurking in the forums as well and love clicking on awesome avatars hoping to find a handmade or vintage treasure to buy.

* START A BLOG. I have learned so much from other people’s blogs which in turn has made me want to visit their shop. Blogs are a great way to get in touch with community, let others know what you are doing, and a great way to start a customer base who loves seeing your newest items.

* BE POSITIVE.I am one of those people who gets turned off by negativity, calling out, downing another sellers items to make you look better, it  makes me never want to buy from that individual. You have to remember that many sellers are buyers, and many buyers lurk the forums and may find being that way as a turn off as well. I always try to stay professional in the forums, and give people the impression that I am a helpful, courteous, and positive seller who embraces the handmade/ETSY community.

I am excited to start this new year, this second year in selling on the right foot. It took me awhile to listen to the advice that was given to me as a newbie and I am hoping that I can help another seller get things started right. I like to think of myself as a late bloomer. I am more then happy to help any newbie, just feel free to message me on my Etsy site NaturalAmber

ETSY SEO and Slumping Views and Sales

Sterling Silver Purse

The talk of June on ETSY has been SEO, how shops are being affected in the ranks on google. One of the hot threads on the forums is:

Concerning Shop Metal Titles, Stella Said….SEO Issues Still a Problem

So where do you stand with this SEO fiasco, has it really affected you or is there a bigger picture outside of SEO? I personally think there is a combination of many things that are affecting the lack of sales, lack of views, and lack of Google hits. I know for myself, my google traffic was never that huge.  Right now I think we are all experiencing:

* SEO issues.Google must be getting confused and the spiders aren’t updating fast enough. Give it a week, maybe the dust will settle.

* Vacation and Summertime.  No control over this, you will have to find new ways to promote to those who are in front of their computer or going shopping. Local advertising may be a great venue to look into during this time. Reach those customers. Pin up some business cards. Invest in postcard mailings. Like that local boutique down the road? Pitch to them.

* Your Shop Needs Improvement. Use this time to take better pictures, make your shop more SEO friendly. Change your titles. Add a new line.

This is a great website to grade your website. It gives you an overall feeling for what Google sees, your Meta Information, and things you can improve:

Summer is realistically a slower time in retail. March – July tend to be slow with things kicking back once the kids start Back to School Shopping. Just remember on ETSY we are given a shopping cart and a virtual store, we need to bring the customers.

ETSY 101: Creative Tagging to Get More Views

Everyone wants to be seen on ETSY, and good tags and good pictures are what gets people coming into your shop and browsing around.  There is definitely an art behind coming up with creative tags, but relevant tags.  So when it comes to tagging you have to be creative, you have to think like a buyer, and you have to describe your items in the following ways:

* Color (and not just the basic colors, how about rogue for red, or aqua for blue, plum for puple)

* Size (small, medium, large, x-large, X inches, X cm)

* Material (the main materials, if you have a hit of silver I wouldn’t add it to your tags, I would to the first list under materials on the front page)

* What Is It?

* Commercial, Handmade, Supplies

* Shape

* Mood (elegant, beautiful, classy)

Tagging is essential to being seen on ETSY, and because of that I wanted to compile a list of great sites I like to use for great tips and adjectives for ETSY Tags!

ETSY 101: Lets Talk Free Shipping

Dangling Gemstone Earrings

Attracting new customers on ETSY can be hard, especially with the abundance  of talented handmade and vintage sellers who have shops on there, so what can you do as a seller to build more of a customer base?  Often times I try to experiment with different ways to attract new customers, recently I have added free shipping and low cost shipping to Canada and International customers as a way to bring in new buyers to my shop Natural Amber Designs. This could be a great way to being in more sales, but I also suggest caution before implementing free shipping into your shop policies. Please keep these in mind before deciding if free shipping would still make your shop profitable:

1. “Weight is Important”  When determining whether or not to have free shipping (and low cost shipping internationally) it’s important for you to take in consideration the weight on your items. If your shipping costs are more then a few dollars then the venture may not be very profitable and you may want to consider just having a lower cost for your shipping without eating too much into your profits. Free Shipping is perfect for shops that sell light weight items such as jewelry and greeting cards since the cost to ship these items are usually under $2.50.

2. “The Current Cost of Your Items” Many ETSYsellers have already discounted their handmade and vintage items to be more competitive, before considering if free shipping would be beneficial for your shop look at the bigger picture. If free shipping and a discounted item leaves you closer to cost and with no additional profit youa re going to be having a problem. You may want to raise the price of your items do what you initially want for them and then consider doing the free shipping.

3. “Don’t Forget to Tag” One more helpful and important thing to remember when offering free shipping is letting those customers who look for free shipping in the search field know your items are tagged with Free Shipping. ETSY gives you 14 tags for your items and I would strongly suggest making sure free shipping is one of them.

Whatever you decide to do, just remember to look at the bigger picture and do what is right for you and your shop. You don’t want to be selling at a loss, but you don’t want to miss out on potential customers as well.

Etsy 102: More Ways To Promote Your ETSY SHOP

Handmade beaded chandelier earrings.

Handmade beaded chandelier earrings.

My first blog in the “promoting your ETSY SHOP” covered the basics of promoting such as joining social networking group, passing out your business cards, and utilizing the forums on the ETSY site. In this blog we are going to dive in a little deeper on new and exciting ways to bring customers to your ETSY shop! There have been many new tools available to ETSY sellers to help promote business to their websites, and many bring great results! So what can you do to bring more customers to you?

1. Upload your items to Google Base. This is a great way to get people coming to your ETSY shop. Google Base lets you upload single items, or you entire ETSY shop (100 items) and let them be search-able in Google Search! This is a great website to help you get started: http://letsets.com/

2. Join Twitter. Twitter is a great new social network where all you do is say what you are doing. Alot of ETSY sellers use this site to list their newest items, rave about their newest projects, and share marketing tips! Other people who are interested in you will follow you on twitter. If you would like to add me my Twitter username is NaturalAmber.

3. Get Juried. Juried sites can bring business to your site, but you got to make sure you are ready to submit a portfolio to them. Since they are juried they do not accept everyone. Don’t get discouraged by rejection, often times many ETSY sellers will get rejected numerous times before getting accepted. Some of the sites you may want to check out are: Trunkt.com, Lollishops.com, and 1000markets.com

4. Join a Street Team on ETSY.  Street teams are a great way to get promoted on ETSY. These groups help promote one another, and often times are combined by a common force: location, and craft are most common.

5. Join a BNR on ETSY. There are rules to BNR’s but I have heard of many successful ETSY sellers who have gotten many new customers through BNR. BNR stands for Buy and Replace. You get added to the list, and you must buy something from someone else on the list. Often times there is no dollar amount on what you need to purchase.

No matter what, just remember to have fun and get your name out there! I have seen too many good sellers quit in the first couple of months from discouragement.  Getting customers can be hard work, but perseverance does pay off.
